Outlaws Outlast Des Moines for 3-2 Season-Opening Win

June 4, 2021

JOPLIN, MO-The Joplin Outlaws defeated the Des Moines Peak Prospects 3-2 in the Outlaws’ MINK League opener on Friday night, sending a large and enthusiastic home crowd home happy following the team’s first home game in 677 days.

Joplin (1-0) took the lead on a two-run single by shortstop Jack Mettam in the fourth inning and held on to the one-run margin the rest of way, as neither team scored the rest of the night.

Both teams threatened in the first two innings, but no one scored until Des Moines (0-3) mounted a two-out rally in the third. Against Joplin starter Cale McAllister, Des Moines strung together three-straight two-out singles in that inning, with the last two from Nate Jessel and Adam Axtell each driving in a run.

Down 2-0, the Outlaws cut the deficit in half right away, as Brandon Ulmer led off with a double to right, moved to third on a groundout, then came home on Logan Cline’s groundout to first.

An inning later, Joplin chased Prospects’ starter Noah Stober with a walk and a single to begin the bottom of the fourth. Following a double steal against reliever Quinn Waterhouse, Mettam rifled a ground ball up the middle through a drawn-in infield, scoring Lawson Faria and Cam Pfafman.

From there, the bullpen held the Prospects at bay, stranding nine opposing runners in the first eight innings, including working around a leadoff double in the seventh. Four Joplin pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters in the contest, extinguishing several potential rallies in the process.

Justin Schrader capped off the win by retiring the side in order in the ninth with two strikeouts—the only inning all night in which Des Moines did not have a baserunner.

McAllister worked 3.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts, while Christian De Jesus (1-0) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks with four strikeouts to earn the win. Clay Saporito logged 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and fanning two, while Justin Schrader punched out two in the ninth for his first save.

The Outlaws will be back in action on Saturday night against the Des Moines Peak Prospects for a 7:00 P.M. first pitch. The game is available on UclickTV on pay-per-view, or on a valid Joplin Outlaws or MINK League pass.
